Along with its prequel, "The New Market Wizards" is not just a book featuring top traders and their killer strategies that brought about their raging success. The two are no less self-help books giving the much needed pointers to anyone who wants to become a better trader as it repeatedly dissects what constitutes fatal emotional pitfalls and helps readers achieve an acute state of naked realization and, perhaps taken to the extreme, self-actualization. This observation is best captured in Jack Schwager's closing interview with Dr. Van K. Tharp in "Market Wizards": "When people approach the markets, they bring their personal problems with them".

For fundamentalists, "Market Wizards" is the more appropriate book to peruse. My favorite section in the book is "A Little Bit of Everything" where views of long-term investors are discussed at length. The longest write-ups in part one of the series, perhaps purposely so, are also the most useful as interviewees proffered their tricks of their trades with great candor - Michael Marcus (42 pages), James Rogers (38), Bruce Kovner (34), Michael Steinhardt (26). Other concise but equally useful comments were aired by David Ryan (20 - and check out the wealth of investment/trading books mentioned in the interview) and William O'Neill (18).

"The New Market Wizards" is in broad terms a general rehash of ideas propounded in the first book, except that it was more geared toward trading styles than investment techniques, plus the myriad traders highlighted were newer to the game at the penning of the book and in this sense their views less impressive/thought-provoking compared to its prequel where the most legendary / creme de la creme were handpicked to go into the definitive book. Consequently, I find myself picking up appreciably less useful ideas from the second book than I did from the first, albeit Jeff Yass's "The Mathematics Of Strategy" was a refreshing read.

As a summary of Schwager's two extraordinary books on top traders, here's my take on the most important elements that contribute to trading success:

(1) Stringent Risk Control
(2) Hard Work & Tenacity
(3) Know Thyself: Identifying Areas Of Competence & Weakness
(4) Know Thy Investment As Crap Begets Crap
(5) Open-mindedness To New Ideas & Unexplored Angles
(6) Willingness To Acknowledge Defeat & Change Tack When Proven Wrong
(7) Resilience, Courage & Conviction When Markets Go Against You In The Short-Term
(8) Humility To Accept That 'The Market Is Always Right'
(9) Patience To Let Profit Run But Resolution To Run When Proven Wrong
(10) Discipline: Setting Exit & Entry Points/Targets
(11) Defensive/Offensive Behavior: 'Preserving Equity First, Making Money Second'
(12) Fire To Succeed: Total Involvement, Not Haphazard Approach

As a humble contribution, I would like to add two cents as to what defines sound trading mindset:

(a) Investment Is Counter-Intuitive: Obvious Bets Rarely Make Good Investments and vice versa.

(b) On-Going Process Of Analysis & Lateral Thinking: Importance of Leaving No Stones Unturned.

(c) Generosity of Spirit: The More That Is Given To You, The More Is Expected Of You. The common thread that reverberated throughout the books was the interviewees' generosity in sharing their secrets of success and their philanthropic works, along the lines of what George Soros is striving to achieve through his many charitable foundations and for Eastern Europe. While we are very far away from the ideal world where markets are efficient and economic allocations optimal, it is my belief that the more the public is being educated about the proper workings of the markets, the more stable they will be, and this will work for the good of the capital markets and benefit the financial/corporate world in time to come.

All said, these books are a must-read for anyone wishing to hone their skills as traders/investors and derive the positive spill-over of conquering the emotional skeletons in their closets which barred many from leading a more fulfilling life, trading/investing or otherwise. The market is a very sobering place to be where sentimentalism is shunned and those resting on their laurels will be quickly eliminated. Taking the quote from investment maestro, Michael Steinhardt, "...there is no real pattern: anyone who thinks he can formulate success in this racket is deluding himself because it changes too quickly". The resounding cardinal rules and techniques repeated by the top traders ad nauseam in these books are bound to take shape in your investment psyche and stand your future trading and investment processes in good stead.

Market wizards - jack d. schwager

Market wizards - jack d. schwager

You read this book not to learn technical patterns or techniques that work. Actually, many of the traders interviewed have opposing views on some techniques. Some say one method won't work and another trader in the book uses that method and is making a killing.

No, you read this book to realize several things about yourself. If you want to make a success, you will have to work at it and stay committed. There is no way around it. Sometimes things will be difficult. Learn from your mistakes and learn that your biggest enemies are emotions and, in some cases, lack of knowledge. One common trait I see in this book is that the traders make it perfectly clear they have self-discipline. Some techniques are common between the traders, and they involve controlling their emotions after bad streaks or winning streaks.

Mastering The Trade by John F Carter

Mastering The Trade by John F Carter

There are at least 10,000 trading books out there. I know because I have probably read half of them. I also believe I have learned something from every one of them. Most of the books are like Doctors, they specialize in one area or another. This book, "Mastering The Trade" is different. Its the "General Practioner" that really knows what he is doing.

John Carter really covers enough ground to help a trader get profitable. He covers all areas of trading - hardware, software, psychology, basic mechanics of markets, and most importantly a traders business plan. Just those items alone more than cover the cost of this book, but then he also adds about a dozen market set-ups. Mr Carter does not just show one or two of each set-up like most books, he shows dozens of each example. Some more profitable than others, but enough to give you a good feeling of what he is trying to explain.

While I do believe this book alone will not make you a great trader, I know it will help you in your journey. This is not an absolute beginner book, you need some market knowledge to get through this comfortably. With that said, I think this is one of the best books out there on trading. I am giving it to my son who has recently become interested in trading after he learned about compound interest. Watch out world, because he is only 14 and is going to start much better prepared then the rest of us!

One last note about this book, you will not read it and become a better trader. Learning to trade is like learning to drive a car. You can't read a book and then go out and drive successfully. You have to practice. You have to see whats working and do more of it, and you have to see whats not working and do less of that. And most importantly you have to do it enough so you get to the point where you feel comfortable with anything the road (or market) throws at you.

Good luck.

Michael Covel - Trend Following

Michael Covel - Trend Following

Why should you read this book? Is the book worth the time and effort? The book layed the foundation for my trading career. Brick by brick and chapter by chapter the author supported why trading as a trend follower is so important. Examples of the successes of current trend followers are peppered through the book.

Does the author give you the secrets to trading? No. Are there any secrets to trading? No. Buy if the price is going up and sell short if the price is going down. Is it that simple? Yes. The author goes out of his way to show example upon example of successful trend traders. These traders are not Wall Street names. They do however, beat the S&P on average year after year, and do so very quietly.

What does it take to be successful? How can I be successful? Simple, find someone who has what you want and then model their behavior. Find a mentor. If you want to make money in the markets then model the behaviour of those who are successful. Granted most of these traders would not take you under their wing, so buy the book and let it serve as your focus. Their behavior is thoroughly outlined through the pages.

People with nothing to say always talk the loudest. In trading the ones who have nothing yell.

Ok, I will start with a run-down of the things I liked best about this book.

-Every trader profiled is very different than the others. Telling me there are hundreds of ways to make money trading.

-Every trader knows his strengths and weaknesses and focuses on what he is good at. The basic centuries old advice "Know Thyself" rings true again. Are you better trading long or short? Fast hits, or more long term? Trade your style for success.

-Every trader says "don't lose money". Come on, who doesn't know that? But it turns out it is probably one of the most violated trading rules out there, one every successful trader follows. As the book states, protect yourself, No Capital, No Trading, No Life.

-You are not smarter than the market. Trade what is happening at this moment, not what you want or hope to happen.

-Stay away from companies with debt. If you are going long, that's a great piece of advice! While other companies that carry debt also move up, those without it move up more reliably.

-Trend is continuous, but turn only happens once.

-If you have to make money, you never will. All of these traders trade to do it right. If you do it right each time you will make money as an added benefit. If you violate your rules the market will punish you.

-Focus on a few stocks, futures, or currencies. You can't trade everything, so you need to become an expert and specialize somewhere.

The traders profiled target different markets. Stocks, futures, and Forex. There is a good assortment here so you should be able to find at least one trader that resonates with your trading style. While every one of them trades differently they all have figured out a system that they stick to. Some have daily profit targets, others don't. Some of the targets are large, others seem very small, like one trader that shoots for ten pips a day. That's a pretty easy target in my opinion, but if you make it a large trade you can achieve a pretty high reward.

One comment in the book really clicked for me. It pretty much summed up in one sentence why I enjoy trading so much. The sentence was "Trading is one of the only professions that punishes you for non-performance". It also rewards you instantly for good performance. There are many jobs in this world where you can skate by and do mediocre work and get away with it. But in trading there is no place to hide. Your P/L will tell you immediately if you have done good or bad. What other career can give you that instantaneous feedback?

Most of these traders paper-trade to ensure their systems work. One trader will triple his paper account before trying the system live. That's dedication to your craft. I have found that I cannot paper-trade too long, maybe I am impatient? That's one reason I like Forex because I can trade very small amounts and actually use real money to do a pseudo-paper-trade. The amount of risk is very tiny, but psychologically I am more focused because I understand its actual money on the line. Then once I have achieved a long enough test sample the only change I have to make is the trade size.

If you trade or are planning on starting, I highly recommend this book. I think there is knowledge here for everyone, no matter what your skill level is.

Rob Booker - Adventures of a Currency Trader

Rob Booker - Adventures of a Currency Trader

Booker did a brilliant job of balancing the dramatic impact of the fictional aspects of this book with the solid non-fiction wisdom he wanted to impart to the reader.

I very easily and painfully (ouch!) identified with the many beginner mistakes the book's hero "Harry Banes" made at the start of his trading experiences. These experiences gave me a greater insight as to why I made the same mistakes in my trading. The book helped me develop a systematic approach to trading based on logic and solid experience vs. emotion and wishful thinking.

I am so glad thatI no longer crave the emotional rollercoaster ride of impulsive day trading. Now I find entering fewer and well thought out trades based on long range goals a lot more satisfying than the frenzied rush of day trading. The biggest gift this book gave me was teaching me that there are more rational and peaceful ways to trade profitably. I would recommend this book very highly to all traders, but especially to the beginners.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"…you will find this book riveting and occasionally amusing, but nothing less than eye-opening." (Securities & Investment review , June 2007)

From the Inside Flap

Let author Rob Booker introduce you to Harry Banes. Harry represents every trader. He doesn't start trading with a huge amount of money, and his ambition is larger than his ability. His financial situation and life as a new trader may be difficult, but his determination allows him to prevail in Adventures of a Currency Trader. ?

Funny, entertaining, and, above all, educational, Adventures of a Currency Trader demonstrates exactly what it takes to capitalize on today's volatile and potentially profitable foreign exchange markets. Told through the eyes of a fictional character by the name of Harry Banes—an aspiring trader who works as a filing clerk in a busy New York law firm—Adventures of a Currency Trader explains in a powerful and compelling manner how you can implement a consistent trading approach in the foreign currency market and become a financially independent currency trader in the process.

There's a little bit of each of us in Harry Banes, and as the story progresses, you'll discover how to turn the lessons outlined in this book into potentially profitable trades. Harry admits early on that he's a rookie trader, which won't adequately prepare you for how bad he really is. But we'll stand by him as he picks himself up from early disappointments and begins to implement the wise counsel of a veteran trader—Harvey Winklestein—who agrees to mentor him.

From Harry's experiences, you'll learn how to recover from disastrous losses, set yourself up as a full-time trader, and talk to loved ones about what you're doing. But that's not all. Through Harry's numerous journeys, you'll also discover how to create reliable charts, perform the proper type of analysis, and make effective trades. Most importantly, you'll learn how to generate substantial profits—and keep them.

Both technical and motivational in nature, Adventures of a Currency Trader is a unique guide to trading that will provide you with a solid foundation in this field. Filled with hard-won wisdom borne of real trading experiences, Adventures of a Currency Trader is destined to become a classic of trading literature.

High Probability Trading Strategies: Entry to Exit Tactics for the Forex, Futures, and Stock Markets (Wiley Trading)

Before we get started, if you are looking for a mechanical trading system, give this book a pass.

The author presents four very useful tools for trading stocks, commodities, or currencies. These are: two time-frame momentum indicators, Elliott waves, Fibonacci with price, and Fibonacci with time. You can use these four tools as a discretionary trading system, but the Fibonacci discussion is especially valuable in and of itself. The author has been around 20 years providing trading advice - an indication of some quality.

I appreciate that the author isn't trying to hard sell his software and newsletter. You can apply the ideas in the book without buying anything more from the author! That is an honest touch that is appreciated. Still the author sells a software package that make things slightly easier, I would imagine. UPDATE: Many people comment negatively that the book is just a sales pitch for the software. Since the book discloses all the four tools, I think such a statement is untrue. However, some of the tool will require you to print out the charts and do manual calculations if you don't have his software.

The style of the text can be somewhat annoying at times; it is repetitive and has too many comments about not-so-good advisors out there somewhere. (No need for the author to point this out unless he wants to name the offenders.) It would have been good if the author told the reader how this book compares to his earlier book Dynamic Trading: Dynamic Concepts in Time, Price & Pattern Analysis With Practical Strategies for Traders & Investors. My take is that the current book introduces the two time-frame momentum and streamlines the other information on Elliott and Fibonacci, but it would have been useful to get this information from the author. Is the previous book superceded in his mind or does it still have value?

All positive reviewers (13 of them at the time of writing) have only reviewed this book and nothing else. Clearly the author has a fan club. Irrespective, I can really this book. I am not part of the fan club and I try to give out as many one star and five star reviews.

Dynamic Trading is perhaps the best work available on the use of Elliott Wave and Gann approaches. Not only are the layout and examples clear and easy to follow, but their real-world application is extensively covered. Robert Miner has produced a seminal work in the practical use of Elliott Wave -- no easy task.

Miner clears the decks early by acknowledging that Elliott's "wave counts" work about 50% of the time. Thus, he does not resort to vague, exceptional wave counts and other fudging factors in an attempt to justify the Master's infallibility.

As a professional trader of almost 20 years, I attempted in the past to apply Elliott wave to daily and intraday trading and failed. I discounted Elliott principally due to the presentation by Elliot academicians.

I get the sense that most authors attempting to explain Elliott and Gann are theorists only and either do not want you to be able to trade using their interpretations or, in fact, are not traders. Miner has clearly been in the trenches, and his book makes the approach accessible.

Though Miner takes a less restricted approach to the interpretation of wave counts, his results are no less impressive. The author is very restrained in touting his software that accomplishes what is explained in depth in the book. However, all formulae (to my knowledge) are revealed and are adaptable to an Excel spreadsheet, which is what I have done.

Wave counts, Fibonacci retracements, time measures, trading strategies, an abundance of practical examples, and much more is covered.

The Wave Structures Check lists, Summaries of the Most Important Price Projections, Ratios by Wave, and Worksheets are invaluable and alone are worth the price of this book. If you trade or plan to, you should buy and study this book.

The Gartley Trading Method: New Techniques To Profit from the Markets Most Powerful Formation (Wiley Trading)

The Gartley Trading Method: New Techniques To Profit from the Markets Most Powerful Formation (Wiley Trading)

Ross Beck's book on the Gartley pattern and trading methods is straight forward and well written; one of the very best trading books I've read. And, I'm not keen on offering over-praise and am intolerant of most trading books where the authors do not take the time nor the interest to write clearly or adequately proof-read their works for errors. Mr. Beck weaves humor, intellect, and wisdom into the pages of salient definitions, methods, applications, and explanations. His command of the subject becomes obvious not by boasting or bloviating, but rather by the breadth and completeness of his book.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

Gartley patterns are based on the work of H.M. Gartley, a prominent technical analyst best known for a particular retracement pattern that bears his name. In recent years, Gartley patterns--which reflect the underlying psychology of fear and greed in the markets--have received renewed interest.
Written by Ross Beck--the recognized authority on the subject of the Gartley pattern--this definitive guide skillfully explains how to utilize the proven methods of H.M. Gartley to capture consistent profits in the financial markets. Page by page, you'll become familiar with Gartley's original work and its evolution, how his patterns can be adapted to today's fast-moving markets, and what it takes to make them work for you. The Gartley Trading Method examines how to Identify and profit from the most powerful formation in the financial markets. Learn about the similarities, differences, and the superiority of the Gartley pattern compared to classical chart patterns, including Elliott Wave! Gartley's pattern is based on a unique market position where most traders refuse to participate due to fear. Designed for traders of all levels, this book reveals how you can overcome this fear, and profit from the most consistent and reliable pattern in the financial markets.
